BNSF Railway
What connects our past to our future?
For every ton of freight moved, trucks emit three times as much CO2 and seven times as much particulate matter as trains. So when the world got serious about climate change, BNSF Railway was in an enviable position: It was already providing the most environmentally friendly mode of surface transportation.
Given its environmental edge, it was natural for BNSF to join the increasing number of companies that issue a corporate citizenship report, more generally known as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) report. But that wasn’t the company’s only edge—BNSF already had a partner with extensive CSR expertise who also knew their business. Methodologie has produced BNSF’s annual report since 2003, and we’ve helped other Fortune 500 companies launch or improve their CSR reporting.
Citizenship reports and traditional annual reports have many distinctions, but they also have many things in common, including audiences, presentation of complex data, and a narrative that should be incorporated into overall brand strategy. For an industrial client like BNSF, the narrative is about more than feeling good—it is a competitive asset and a prerequisite for sticking around another 150 years.
As more companies integrate CSR practices into overall business strategy, CSR and corporate communications are blurring and moving online. Even without our history with BNSF, Methodologie’s combination of CSR, interactive, and investor communications expertise makes us the ideal candidate to help the 150-year-old company prepare for the future.
